I am replacing my tired old imac G5. I am not a gamer but will be running Aperture allot. I want a system for speed at this, as well as longevity. I was thinking of the imac 2.93 and upgrading to the ATI 2450 GPU. Any thoughts. My other thought was a 15" Mac book pro with upgraded graphics and adding the 24"led display. I could go refurb with these to keep costs down a little. I dont need to travel but the laptop would be nice for flexibility around the house. The led/mbp would be nice but it would be around $300 more for less HD space and a slower GPU and I wouldn't get the free ipod touch I can get on the student deal now. any and all input is appreciated.

yes that was a typo. 4850. Nothing in Refurb with the 4850 but if I buy new I get the ipod right now (ED deal). Would you recamend the 4850 for my needs or anouther gpu?

Unless you're doing a lot of HD video and the like, the standard GT 120 should be just fine.

Realy. I was told Aperture would respond much better with the 4850. Will the 4850 future proof the computer any more than the nvidia cards?

Then I'd say if you can find a 4850-equipped refurb iMac within a week or two, get it. If not, either order a new iMac with the 4850, or get a refurb with the GT 120.

Orderd the new imac with the 4850 on the student deal so I will get an ipod touch for free after rebate. That will help keep the wife happy.

yeah get the 4850 refurb but the gt 120 will be fine enough

yup 2.93 Ghz with the 4850 plus Aperture and iwork. Can't wait. It should be a little quicker than my G5 1.8 Ghz imac.

Nifty. I'd like Aperture, but it would be pretty useless with my current camera. I'd like to get a Sony Alpha A330 and a 300mm zoom lens and 30mm macro lens.

Good choice. I have an iMac and love it. It will also be faster than the MBP as it has a 3.5" hdd over a 2.5"!

Aare you not afraid that Apple will update the Imac on Wednesday, so you will lose if the new iMac comes it? Why did you buy right now?

I say the get the MBP and LED. You will fall in the love with the MBP. It has so much more soul than the iMac.

No new imacs on Wed. It's all about the ipod. Free ipod touch up until Tues.

Are you kidding? The desktop line was updated in March. It's usually a yearly thing.

(AFAIK) Since the first iPod was introduced, September has always been about the iPod and iTunes.

So don't even hope the iMac will even be on a slide. It's not happening.
