iMac or MBP Retina?

So my pc desktop is broken and I've taken a fancy to iMacs as they have those in my school library. Issue is my current MBP is from 2010 and doesn't transfer sound when I do HDMI out. I'm debating between a new MBP with the retina display or a 21 inch iMac for home. Which would you suggest?

If you're asking this question, then you really aren't using the MBP other than at the desk, correct? Assuming that is true, I'd say the imac is your best option.

I use my MBP for class and when I have finals to study for mostly.

It seems like the real question is do you need/want a laptop or a desktop?
