Hi, I've had an Imac for three years and over the last two months the fan has come on quickly and gets really loud with little activity like just typing on Word. resetting the SMC and cleaned the vents, but no joy. I've just installed istat and got this feedback: cpu fan 3419 temp 44, hdd 1099, odd 1327
any help gratefully received

The CPU Temp is reasonable but the CPU fan speed is not.. I suspect that the temp sensor is faulty. Unfortunately it is difficult to replace. I don't know which iMac you have but, here is a link to an iFixit guide that will give you some idea of the complexity of the repair. It is for a mid 2011 21.5" iMac.

You could try using software to control the fan.

If it is under Apple Care, take it to the Apple Store.

thanks for your quick response. my DIY skills extend to changing mouse batteries so I'll give replacing the sensor a miss. I don't have apple care so I'll try the fan software and see if that helps. thanks again.

installing Macs Fan Control seems to be have done the trick. CPU fan now stays below 1300rpm. Thanks for the advice.
