iMac PPC stalls at BSD root: since 10.5.5 update

iMac PPC stalls at BSD root:disk0s3, major 14, minor 3
since 10.5.5 update

darwin Kernel Version 9.5.0: Wed Sep 3 11:31:44 PDT;
root xnu-1228.7.58~1/RELEASE_PPC

I started in single user and ran fsck -f "The volume MacHD appears to be OK"

How can I continue booting from this point?
(of course exit says logout and stalls)

DVD reader is dead.
Attempt to boot install DVD via firewire to ibook target get started then hangs with spinning beach ball on blank screen.

Attempt to boot ubuntu linux from firewire does not present ubuntu boot choice menu. ( same CD does boot on ibook)
:confused:

Any and all thoughts / suggestions are appreciated.
