I am waiting for the 2012 iMac but was wondering which one to buy the 21.5" or the 27"? i went to the apple store today and the 27" looked enormous, probably will eat away my table. i want your input on this.
if i get the 21.5" i might upgrade the processor
if i get the 27" i will keep it like that and probably add iWorks with that.
then again, 2012 iMacs might have totally different screen sizes

For me the increased resolution of the 27" model made it preferable. I'm going to be coding on it, and want enough screen real estate so I can have reference documents open to the side, and that bump to 2560x1440 will make it much easier for me to have them up side-by-side.

Are you planning to have any frequent uses that will benefit from that?

The 21.5 is probably enough. I bought the 27 only because I had a massive desk to fill and the 27 took up a lot of the real estate. The 21.5 is a really nice machine and will serve you well. The only really advantage of the 27 is that watching movies on it is a very enjoyable experience.

i think the 21.5" is the perfect size at this point. the 27" is huge and i think the resolution/size ratio of the 21.5" is the better of the two.

Take the 27", stick it to the wall and it won't take any desk space. I did it and i love the huge screen, i just like you thought that maybe it was to big. But i went with it anyway. Got used to it and i'm never going to buy a 21,5" :)

You can also do what I did. Buy the 21.5", upgrade to the i7 and setup a dual monitor. I had a fairly nice 22" HP monitor from my last Windows PC and it matches the iMac quite nicely and has decent resolution...

I'm loving the dual screen and think I would prefer this setup rather than the one big 27" screen.

Sometimes my 21" is too big for me. LOL I have to admit that I love the full screen internet experience on my iMac.

Thanks people. I was thinking of upgrading a 21.5" iMac but then again i also love watching movies on a big screen, so i might want the 27". for now i'm going to hold off on the decision until the refresh/redesign which might introduce a 24" for people like myself. :apple:

The 27" is only too big for about 1 day. I was really close to getting the 21.5" for the same reason, but ended up swinging for the 27. I pushed it to the back of my desk, and haven't regretted it for a moment.

I doubt Apple will bring back the 24" again. Although, I did prefer them myself. Still got one that works actually. :D

I bought my 27" with a view to having it retire as a 'smart' TV.

Love the size for everyday use too. No regrets here.

I had the same problem

When I was looking at iMacs at around this time last year, I deliberated over 21.5 and 27. I wanted the bigger screen because I do video editing recreationally, and its great to have the extra screen real estate for linear timelines.
I decided to go for the 27" because I found out the footprint of it only took up 1 inch more of my desk.
It was definitely worth it.:apple:

It's all personal preference. Some people prefer the resolution of the 27" screen but some people are fine with the 1080p that the 21.5" version can offer.

Personally, I knew that I wouldn't need more than 1080p but knew that a better processor would be better. So personally I went with the 21.5" model but upgraded to the i7 which cost the same as the base model 27" would have been.

No one can give you an exact answer. Some prefer the screen size, some prefer the power. All a personal choice.
