Quick question. I have a late 2009 with 4GB (2x2) and two available slots. Can I put a single 4GB in one of the available slots? Or do I have to have a matching pair of some sort?

Thanks

You can put in a single module, the advantage of two same modules is a 10 to 20 % RAM performance boost.

Yes, according to Apple support, this takes advantage of the system's dual-channel memory architecture for an additional performance boost. With a dual-channel memory interface, both banks of SDRAM can be addressed at the same time.
