my friend has messed up his mac, by downloading something, but he doesnt know what, but he has both the lepord and snow laepord discs, if he installs them will everything reset and will it just be like it was when he first got it, with no virus's etc.
 
does your friend have backups of their doc's, photo's etc.

if you think that you have a virus etc then you can use your SL dvd to do a clean install and also format your hdd.

Be sure you have backups first

Yes, everything should work flawlessly after clean install is it's software error (it likely is). Boot from Snow Leopard install disk (hold down C while booting) and select Disk Utility from top bar. Then click erase tab and erase everything from HD and after that, just install OS X
