imac retina and low resolution video

Hi,
i'm not a mac user, i work with Linux, but i'm thinking to take a Mac in a short time. I'm a amateur photographer and sometime i do some video editing but i love also watching dvd and Tube videos like live concert. Thus i'm thinking to take an Imac 27" retina but seen that so far i haven't never seen a retina screen and still less an 5k one i'd like to know how it works with youtube videos (mosty still have 480p resolution) and old dvd , fullscreen of course.

480p upscales fine in full screen mode and doesn't look any worse than on non-retina. However, do try to choose HD or 4K when you can.
