Imac Safari Issue help please

What could be the reason why my safari browser runs so slow?
Ok so my safari most of the time will not load and just keep saying its loading and eventually after about 5 minutes will then load the page i was trying to go to.. but then other times it works normally.. but most of the time i am quitting safari and then reopening and trying to get to the next website.. i recently upgraded to osxlion and I'm not sure but ever since then it seems like its ran slow.. I'm not to sure though if it was the upgrade to lion or not or what it could be.. any help would be great thanks..

oh and I'm running on

Imac Version 10.7.2 , 3.06 GHz intel core 2 Duo

Memory of 4GB 1067 MHz RAM

I've have this problem sometimes,I usually let it open the home page first mine being YouTube,After that I have no problems with speed however if it doesn't open after a few seconds or so I open a new tab and it loads right up like nothing was wrong.I had this problem on snow leopard also.

Under the File menu try Empty Cache and then Reset Safari.
