I want to get an iMac but the only thing stopping me is I am not sure about how the screen is. I need something that won't display banding in the gradients on lower values. Does the iMac give a smooth dark grey to black value range with the LED backlighting or do I need to go with a Dell ultrasharp?

My suggestion is to take some images on a CD or DVD and bring it to an Apple store and look at the pictures on an iMac there. Remember that the color profiles on the iMacs may have been played with by someone so at least make sure it is the default profile for an iMac.

I haven't seen anything that looks like banding on my iMac, but like keyboards and mice, screens are a personal preference item.
