iMac screen goes black after startup spinning gear

After starting the iMac and showing the spinning gear (startup screen) the screen goes completely black, like powered off, but the computer keeps working as usual, I even can see it on TV via external video output.

Anyone having this problem or idea of what it can be? The model is iMac 21.5 Mid 2011.
