sorry if this sounds like a stupid question.

but, if i plugged my macbook into my imac with the revelent cables could i use the macbook as an extra screen for the imac or would that not work?

Again the iMac has no video in port, only out. You could use the software suggested above if you can live with the network latency.

From my use, with wireless g , the network latency is not too bad an issue. I just used it to have iTunes on my MB's screen while I used an iMac.

Dragging the app between the screens was not fantastic, but still it was perfect. I guess it would be better with n.

So giga, even 100Mbps, LAN speeds must be very nice and smooth if I understand your comments.
