I've just been playing with another 'new' G4 iMac. I'm a sucker for 'em! :)
I took a screenshot and it appeared on the desktop as an Adobe Acrobat 6 pdf. In the past I've been used to seeing screenshots appear as a .png file in preview.
Have been trying in vain to make a screenshot appear as a .png file by default, but have failed miserably. They always appear as a pdf. Does anyone have the answer to this?
The OS installed is 10.3.9 Panther.

Download and install Onyx for Panther.

In the options in there for screenshots change it from PDF to PNG. It's a system preference.

Thanks for this.
Downloaded the correct version of Onyx, then went to install it. Was then asked for admin password and realised I didn't have the original - so unable to install.
Searched around and found an OS X Panther install disk, and thought I could launch this just to get in and change the admin p/w. Holding down 'C' whilst booting failed to launch the CD. Tried again and failed. Then put in a music CD to check the optical drive. It read it ok, so the drive appears to be functional. This has now cast some doubt on the Panther install disk, but I'm sure I've used it satisfactorily in the past.
Not to worry as I planned to completely refurb this iMac and install an SSD, and this has now commenced.
To my surprise when I picked it up from the seller, I realised this is a rather 'special' iMac.:D I'll enlarge on that comment together with a complete photoshoot of the refurb asap.

Typing:

defaults write com.apple.screencapture type PNG

in the Terminal should allow you to take screenshots of PNG format again. I tried this once way back, but I don't know for certain if it works as far back as 10.3.9.

I also recently had to re-do the password for a lost admin account of a 10.2.8 machine. It took a LOT of digging online to find the answer that worked with anything before 10.4 and 10.5, but here should help you reset it without using an install CD as well.
