I recently bought a new iMac 27" and so far its great. I initially bought one, brought it home and set it up but it turned out to be defective hardware, so I brought it back to the store and got another new one which is great. However when I went to register it at the apple site, I got an error saying the serial number wasn't recognized and to call apple support.

Well I was confused as this is a brand new iMac right from the best buy store. So I did a little googling and even tried out some of the online serial number database for apple products. There were a few threads saying serial numbers that start with D2 are refurbished units. However mine was clearly factory sealed and brand new. So I called apple and they were very nice to talk to and it didn't take long to get a real American person on the other end. I was impressed. Anyway, I gave them my serial number and they assured me that numbers that start with D2 are NOT refurbs in any way. They even told me the date Bestbuy bought it in bulk and updated my purchase date to the current date of purchase as they have no way to know when Bestbuy sells a unit out of their inventory.

Anyhow I just wanted to post this in case anyone else runs into this and starts worrying their new Mac could be a refurb, their not and I actually spoke with 2 different people at apple and they assured me this is not the case. They said all refurbs will have a special serial number with like and ref or rb in front.

So no worries if your new mac serial doesn't take on apple's site, just give them a call, they really impressed me with their phone support which I would say nowadays is second to none. I have;t had service like that in decades.
