I have been researching for days about people having issues with their iMac's download speed. All the fixes I found really didn't do much for me.

I have 4 computers in my house and I pay for download speeds up to 60Mbps. When placing all of the computers on the same desk, 3 out of the 4 computers (bot my imac) download between 45 and 58Mbps. My iMac is download at 5 to 10Mbps.

Is anyone else having the same issues or know of any fixes? I know it has something to do with the wireless card since when I hard wire the iMac into the router I'm downloading at 60Mbps. Any help would be much appreciated.

I'm testing on both speakeasy.net and speedtest.net.

First thought would be to check that your iMac is connecting to your
wireless router instead of a neighbors.

You could also go into the network connections - and delete the DNS server(s) and relplace them with googles 8.8.8.8 or 4.4.8.8 or the generic ones
4.2.2.1.

Lastly try to repair permissions and see what happens.

Thanks, do you have a step by steo instruction to change the DNS server? I'm not familiar with it.

Sure.

Top right of your iMac has a WiFi Triangle thingy. Click on that and choose
'Open Network Preferences'.
Check that you have WiFi highlighted.
Then Choose 'Advanced' in the lower left.
Then Choose 'DNS' on the upper tab.
On the left it says 'DNS Servers'.
The '+' and '-' signs let you add or delete your DNS.
You can delete the DNS servers you have and then use the
plus sign to add the Google one or the generic.

While you are there and before you add a Server - check the TCP/IP Tab
and choose the 'Renew DHCP lease'. This might help unclog the wifi on
the iMac too.

If wondering, my W7 laptop downloads / video streams much faster then my iMac. If comparing W7 to iMac on downloads, the W7 is much faster. Yes, tweaking the iMac settings (and adjustement iMac's MTU size) makes it slightly faster. But "out of the box", my low cost W7 laptop downloads much faster...
