iMac speaker output suddenly low

The strangest thing - volume used to be HUGE and now its low and tinny sounding. Any suggestions on what happened and how I can rectify?

no my volume is all the way up, (and in the past, if I had the volume that loud, it would be deafening) I have checked the system preferences and everything is working fine. This is a relatively new machine (purchased in October 08) so I think there is one integrated speaker (if I am reading apples technical notes properly)

If you have any suggestions, please let me know.

...its somewhere in your preferences or you blew your speakers...but I doubt that...

I would try logging in as a new user by creating one in prefs. This may eliminate any setting changes. If your still having issues I would get it checked out.
