iMac stops seeing USB Drives

Every so often, when I plug in a USB hard drive, no icon appears on the desktop.

The only "solution" I've found is to reboot the iMac then the icons appear as expected.

Not sure why this happens.

Any ideas what process could be hung or needs to be restarted?
