I have a 24 inch iMac 2008 Intel and a strange problem, in the last few days the HDD fan has started to make a squeeling noise , so I am taking the iMac in for a repair , Ive just noticed for the first time that when I completley shut down the iMac if I put my ear to the rear of the back black outer case I can hear a faint fan like noise ( a bit like the squeeling HDD fan problem but only softer ) the iMac is still connected to my UPS unit , but the iMac is turned off. If I pull out the mains power lead from the back , the soft squeeling noise stops, if I leave the power lead connected but swithced off the UPS the soft squeeling also stops.

So iMac switched off only using the on/off button on the rear
the noise can be heard

So pull the mains lead out from the back of the iMac , the noise stops

So leave the mains power lead connected to the iMac , but switch off the USP , the noise stops .

not too sure what's going on , any ideas Please

Thanks .

note- reapair history of my 2008 iMac to date

replaced 4 displays
replaced graphic board
replaced optical drive
and now needs a replacment HDD fan
