iMac to HDTV

I have an older iMac with a mini DVI port and a Hitachi HDTV. What the easiest/cheapest way to hook up my iMac to the TV?
I want to be able to watch avi videos and photo slide shows on my TV.

Would a simple mini DVI to HDMI cable do? Would I get sound with that?
Or is it easier to jailbreak an Apple TV?
Any other options?
