..ended up getting an imac last summer instead of the nmp.. the mac pro config i wanted (needed a display too) was in the $5-$6000 and i ended up being hesitant about dropping that much dough on a gen1. i'm excited about the dual gpu and i'm nearly positive generation1 users will be able to better utilize the hardware within its lifespan but i was also a bit hesitant to pay for d700s last year when i probably couldn't use them for a couple years..
(though things are looking good for my renderer http://www.indigorenderer.com/node/1950 )

so the idea was to get an imac as a hold-me-over til gen 2 or 3.

here's the review

for pretty much 100% of the time i'm working at the computer, it's awesome.. i'm pretty sure it's the most perfect CAD machine apple has ever made.
(27"/3.5i7/24g..2560 x 1440)

the design is noticeably neat in that it does actually unclutter the desk

when you need to have the computer continue to work after you've quit working (ie- rendering), it's not too good.

i mean, performance wise, it's seems great for what you should expect from 4cores.. it hasn't broken or anything like that..(yet?)

just that the fan kicks in in a minute and stays on all night.. but it's loud and hot and maybe detracts from confidence in the tool. it just doesn't sound like it's built for long periods of max power.

so still looking forward to a mac pro again but yeah, the imac is really sweet to use too.
