Question about the New iMac's video out jack:

I understand that this is ONLY for video mirroring (which really sucks), but is there any means of increasing the resolution from 1024x768 when mirroring to an external monitor? Is there any third-party software or hardware that can make this happen?

Also, is there any third-party hardware or software which can enable an external monitor to increase screen real estate, rather than merely video mirroring?
