Should i get a baseline 2013 21.5 iMac, or a baseline (4gb) 13 retina macbook pro.

I do:
Internet browsing
YouTube
School work via parallels

Thats pretty much it. What would be better.

In my opinion, a new 13'' MBP (BTO i7 2.8GHz + 16GB RAM + 256GB PCIe) is more "future-proof" (cheaper? an i5 2.6GHz+8GB RAM+256GB PCIe fits your needs, too!)...also, you may buy a "good" 24'' monitor (ASUS, DELL, NEC, EIZO etc)...and you're done! an excellent mobile plus desktop combination...

+ APPLE CARE PROTECTION (MUST HAVE).

(if you prefer dGPU, you will have more choices...and it will cost you more, without actual usage for your needs!)

Do you need portability? Do you want a larger screen for watching videos?
The 8GB in the iMac would be better for Parallels depending on what Windows applications you're running.

If he asks for help, then it must be because he can't determine his needs. And his needs are by far covered by a MBA, and it is cheaper and more portable, and suits his study needs better.
The price of the 2 baseline machines is the same. the iMac will wind up costing less with AppleCare.

A MBA may not be suitable for their needs. you're making an assumption because they're trying to decide between an iMac and rMBP.

That is correct...but he/she needs enough portability (back and forth to school )...
The OP didn't say anything about portability, you are also making assumptions.
