I'm currently using a 2010 MBP (2.4GHz i5, 8GB RAM, 320GB HDD). I've recently started editing video in FCP X as part of a new job, and am finding the MBP isn't quite up to the task.
I have to switch to using proxy media, FCP runs pretty slowly and beachballs frequently, and rendering times are ridiculous. A typical video will be approximately 30 minutes long, using two streams of 1080p 50fps video and two audio tracks. I have background rendering disabled, and will usually sharpen the footage and modify the colour. Rendering times are usually in excess of 20h (to a FW800 scratch disk), which is mental.
Personally I'd rather have the rMBP due to the portability, but I'm dubious as to how well it'll handle my workflow. I've no doubt that it'll be quicker, but will I still be stuck with long rendering times that can only be bettered with an iMac?
Ideally it'd be nice to be able to import footage without having to transcode proxy media, edit it, and render a 30 minute clip in 4 hours or so.
I appreciate there hasn't been a hands-on with the new iMacs yet, but based on specs I'm keen to know what people recommend. If the performance of the new iMac isn't expected to be much greater than the rMBP in terms of rendering times then I'd certainly choose the rMBP for portability.
Assume that I'm referring to the highest spec BTO versions of each machine.
Thanks in advance!
