iMac with blank screen but mouse shows

This came from a friend of mine. Hoping someone can help. He says it happened once before and mashing on the keyboard eventually triggered something that brought the screen back.

Anybody have an idea as to what this is. Anyway, here is his query to me.

something weird going on with my desktop.

have black screen with no icons and nothing but the mouse when machine is switched on. everything is black and disappeared. tried pulling plug and rebooting it up - still black screen with little white mouse triangle only

any ideas??

So it successfully boots past the and goes black with the cursor?
