iMac won't log in (Sierra installed)

hi all,

Wonderd if I could pick some brains. I have downloaded sierra and have been able to log in as normal multiple times before but after a day or two of not interacting with my mac the computer when ever I enter my log in password the spinning beach ball comes up and I never get any further than the log in screen!

Any advice?
