iMac won't sleep due to external dvd burner

Hello,

I have a 24" iMac with Leopard 10.5.2. My computer used to go to sleep just fine; but since I plugged in a firewire LaCie external cd/dvd burner, the computer frequently accesses the drive for no apparent reason. I believe this is preventing it from going to sleep but have been unable to confirm... and even if that isn't the reason for the sleep problem, I would prefer that whatever process is accessing my drive would stop it : )

Do you need to have it plugged in all the time?

I only connect mine when I need it. No sense in wasting electricity when I only use it once a week or so.
