iMac6,1 as external monitor for MBA3,2

Wonder if someone could please give a definitive answer to the following. I've searched the net & these forums but the advice is confusing me.

I have a MacBook Air3,2 running OSX 10.6.8. I'd like to use an iMac 6.1 24" Sept 06 -> Aug 07, running OSX 10.5.8 as an external monitor for the MBA.

The MacBook air has a mini display port, the iMac has a display port which I do not recognise.

Any idea if the above is possible? My alternative is to use a mini display port to VGA convertor and use a standard Dell monitor. I'd like to utilise the iMac if it is possible.

Only the 27" iMacs can be use as an external display. Your iMac has a mini-DVI port.
