I know there is a legacy (windows 7) one built into windows 10, but I really would maybe like to branch off and try something else.

what would you guys use.
 
I tried it and Acronis. Awful and didn't even work.

No problems here. Use Macrium over 1 year now ( first v5, now v6 ). I make daily backups and did restores as well, images and files. You can open image files with a browser and restore single files of the image.

Macrium provides a free license for non commercial use, good enough for a MBP ;) . To restore an image, you need to boot from USB or DVD on OSX / Windows systems ( MBP partition scheme supports only 4 partitions [EFI|OSX|OSX Recovery|Windows] ).
