Image Darkened With Projector

I have been using my MacBook with a projector just fine for years. Since upgrading to 10.6.3, now the projected image is dimmer/darker. I am using both Powerpoint and Keynote and both are dimmer. I tried another projector and the same thing happens so it is not the projector's bulb. Any ideas?
 
Exactly the same thing has been happening to me when I connect to my LCD TV - it gives a disappointing dim image. I would appreciate any advice.
