Image files do not open up properly on desktop or in Messages?

I have a reoccurring issue with image files on my desktop that when I press the spacebar, instead of opening up to preview them, they open up in a window with info. I want them to open up as a full image preview to quickly go through images. I sometimes have the same problem with photos in my Messages. Is there some setting somewhere to change this? I'm on Monterey. Thanks
