Using a MacBook Air M1 with macOS 15.2, Image Playground is pretty slow.

Is this normal because I have an older MBA (M1) or is there something going on with Apple's servers causing the delays? Maybe I'm just not doing it right. LOL When I type something like "crocodile wearing a tutu" it takes >10 mins to generate an image. ChatGPT generates it fairly quickly.

Pretty much immediate here - just tried the same request as yours - on Mac mini M4.

Yikes, 10 mins doesn't sound right. It has nothing to do with Apple's servers though, since Apple Intelligence and Image Playground runs locally on your machine...so it's something to do with your computer. It's pretty quick on my M3 MBP and M1 iPad. Maybe try rebooting or checking your CPU and memory usage.

Also, pay attention to the bubble. If it turns yellow and blurred, it means it can't create an image with the description you gave it. That situation has happened to me a few times where I missed the small text at the top saying it can't use that description, so I ended up waiting and waiting. I've finally realized the blurred yellow bubble means it's not doing anything and I need to undo or change something.

On M1 Air it doesn't even work. It just shows "Unable to use that description" message and that's it - even if I try to click on built in suggestions.

Takes about 6-8 seconds here on a MBP M1 Pro. I'm just putting this down to having a weaker neural engine than later M-chips, but I don't know.

Results so far have been mixed.

It's immediate for me on an M1 Mac Studio. That being said, it's a useless app/feature for anything beyond creating avatars because the image it generates is so small and only screen resolution.

1024x1024 I find not that small - for screen usage.

All yours. Macbook Air M1 with 8GB RAM. About six seconds. At first they took longer, something was either downloading or indexing or whatever it is that it does.

"crocodile wearing a tutu" took about 1 second to produce 5 iterations of the image, with more iterations popping up in about 1 second each.

I am in Italy, with Macbook Air M1 set to English (like always in the past) and can't use Image Playground. Whatever I type and wherever I click, I get "Unable to use ... ". But there are some models on my M1 as the available space after activating Image Playground has some GBs less.

The screenshot shows what I get for the prompt "crocodile wearing a tutu".

Apple should clarify their plans for EU: with all their engineers working on functionalities that we do not get here, we spend plenty of money on machines that are lagging behind Windows and Linux on all non-AI stuffy.
