Is there a difference in image quality between the two? I am looking at the home screen with mirroring to the apple tv and some of the icons look pixelated a bit. Would a direct cable produce a better image or is it pretty much the same?

A direct cable would in fact produce a better image.

Dang I wish I knew that earlier. 720p explains so much.

You can imagine it is not widely advertised ;-).

Lightning to HDMI adapter is actually a magic trick. A bad one.

Personally I do a lot of presentation from my iPhone. Keynote really works great and fast, but lately image quality has started becoming an issue. I really, really wished Apple would change the port on iPhones to USB this year, but no luck.

is the airplay mirroring 720p as well?
I give presentations daily on my ipad. I have the air 3. Didnt think I would need the extra bells and whistles of the pro models. Had I have known this I would have gotten a pro.

oh well maybe next model

Airplay depends on content. If it's a movie stream, it can go to 4k I believe, mirroring is 720p.

This is one of the reasons I'm considering the Pro for lecturing. Most of the time old projectors are the bottleneck, but from time to time I'm presented with a large 4k TV and it really looks bad.

i completely feel you on this.

I tried appletv and direct connection on our electronic boards (roughly 55") and it just does not look right.

I have also been switching to using my ipad to nearly 100% of my work but when connected to the monitor at my desk it just looks bad.

I think i will wait two generations for ipad pro since the air 3 is still so new, but I really do want to upgrade to a pro just for better video output.

I dont really stream media, just mirror what is on my ipad + keynote
