Friends,

What program do you recommend to make an image of my Mac (such as acronis or ghost on Windows), so that, in case of a crash, I have an exact copy of everything? Time machine does this or just lets me restore individual files?

Thanks!

time machine
carbon copy cloner (ccc)
superduper
retrospect
amanda
clonezilla
bacula

listed by (I think) ease of use.

Time machine does NOT make an image... However, if you have a TM backup that is all you really need to get back to where you were after some sort of HD failure. Carbon Copy Cloner works very very well and is free. Has saved my bacon a number of times.

Thanks. With TM, lets say I have a failure, Id have to reinstall OS and then restore TM backup, would I need to reinstall all the programs...? its just useful to restore files?

Wondering if its enough for me.

Thanks

All you do is restore the apps. No need for reinstallation.

Wow, fantastic. Thanks! So no need for image software for me, the native mac backup is really great :)

One of the reasons people chose CCC over TM is because you can boot from the external with CCC. If you have no need for this, TM is a great option.
