For some reason I just a load of grey squares and if I tap one it tells me I’m offline, which I’m not as you can see (and I just did a speed test getting over 100mbps), any idea what could be the issue?

iPhone XR Images app in iMessage not working?

Because when you try to access the photos from iMessage, it downloads the full resolution version from iCloud before sending it.
I think you misunderstand, I’m talking about the Images app not the Photos app, so no link to iCloud

Ah! Apologies. That’s just a web search shortcut to find images. Not a separate app. I’ve had this issue as well & then it got resolved by itself.
