I noticed that through darker colored windows I can see very faded images of my desktop icons and sometimes other windows on it. I think the still images are burning onto the screen. Is there anyway to keep this from happening, and will the damage already done disappear eventually?

What kind of monitor are you using? Screen burn in hasn't been an issue since the mid-90's. Use a screen saver and typically the burn in does not go away. It's permanent.

So is it safe to keep screen brightness at max or should I take it down a few?

Image brightness isn't due to the LCD, it is from the backlight, so bright or dim, it doesn't affect the performance or longevity of the liquid crystals.
