Maybe you shouldn't have a picture as background, maybe try a clean background.
Other than that I don't know since the pictures are already pretty small.

Yeah ditch the background image.

1) It will load faster

2) It will make it A LOT easier to read the text in the body.

Or just change the text colour if you want to keep the image.

Use a solid background. It will look cleaner and load faster. If you decide to change the color of the text, select a dark color. Light colors are difficult to read no matter the background.

yeah the 975KB background image is a total waste of bandwidth. Also you entire button interface is image based, you need to change these all to CSS based buttons since you only have two styles of buttons and because you are making the user request way to many files for accessing your site. Last I would use again CSS based buttons because the yahoo site builder you are using atm is making tons of useless javascript buttons.
