imap account not saving sent email on server correctly

i've set up an IMAP account (SSL) on mail.app 3.2, and have ticked the box to tell it to save sent/trash emails on the server.

however, when i send an email it is creating a new folder on the server even though there is already a folder specified for sent emails

the imap path prefix is set to "INBOX" as per the instructions give by the mail host.

my mail account has the following folders on the server

Inbox
Drafts
Sent
Trash

i need to mail.app to use these folders, and not attempt to create new folders to sent/trash.

any ideas why it's creating new folders and not using the folders already there ?

the same imap account on my iphone is using the folders correctly (was set up manually on the iphone).
