Imap with iphone4

When I setup other email, my iPhone defaults to pop but I want imap. With the 3GS there was an imap and pop tab in the email setup, but none in the 4. Am I missing something? When I try to change to imap server and port 143 says it can't find imap server? Do I need a different version of the os?
