note: No problems here. Just curious about the IMEI value as shown in the Settings->General->About menu.

Today I replaced my old 3GS with a new iPhone5. I was making calls on the new phone immediately after leaving the apple store. When I got home I restored all my old phone's data to my new phone (via iTunes). Then I checked the Settings->General->About info and found that my iPhone5 displayed the IMEI number for my old 3GS phone. I looked up the number on one of the popular IMEI info web sites and it showed that the IMEI number belonged to a 2009 r. 3GS model with an ARM processor (my old phone).

I proceeded to update the iOS and firmware. After a short nap, I checked the IMEI number again. Settings ->General->About now showed the new IMEI number that matches what is etched on the back of the phone. Also, the imei info site has all the correct info for the new number (model 2012r, processor A6...)

Anyways, I am wondering if restoring the data from my old 3GS phone temporarily made my new iphone5 display the old IMEI. I am also wondering what actually updated it to the correct value. Maybe the ios/firmware upgrade? Or just some activation process that takes a few hours? It Just seems odd that the IMEI for an old phone would ever show up on my new phone. Isn't this something that ios should always query the hardware for?
