iPad iMessage after Facetime Call

I'm having a weird problem: I call a friend on Facetime. He declines my call. He sends me an iMessage to explain why he can't talk, and instead of it going to my iPad it goes to my secondary email address. What is going on??? AppleCare doesn't have any idea. My friend is on an iPhone.
