iMessage and SMS

So,I haven't had many people with iPhones in my circle of people, however there is someone and whenever I send them an iMessage it gets saved to a separate tab in the messages app. Is this normal behavior as the conversation splits since SMS and iMessage gets saved to two different tabs?
