Imessage backupp or/and restore

I had to delete most of my Imessage threads to make room for the ios8 install thinking I could easily restore them from icloud but I guess this is not the case. Is there another way in the future to backup imessage text so I don't lose them?

Are the threads I deleted gone for good or is there something I am missing in order to restore?

If you go through OTA update, installation process needs more space to unpack files to complete the installation process. What I would suggest, you update iOS 8 through iTunes to avoid clean up space on your device.
