iMessage badge issues

I get a sound alert, but no visual, i.e. badge, alert on my iPhone 6. I've tried rebooting the phone, I've made sure Do Not Disturb isn't on, and though the badge (and number of messages) appears on my MacBook Pro's dock, it doesn't on the phone, where I need it. Any solutions...?

Settings, Notifications, Messages, make sure Badge App Icon is turned on.

Of course. That was the first thing I checked, and all are exactly that. But no badge. No visual alert.
