iMessage badge showing 2 unread messages

12.0 on a 6th generation iPod Touch but I have had this issue since iOS 11. The iMessage app shows there are two unread messages but of course there aren’t any.

I have tried:

Shut down and restart
Shut down holding power/home buttons until the Apple logo appears
Close iMessage
Turn off iMessage in Settings and turning it back on
Deleting everything in iMessage

Is there something else I can do?

I don't know what happened but when 12.0.1 installed the unread messages badge reset itself.
