iMessage "blend" on two phones with same Apple ID

I'm helping a lady out that I know. She has two different devices, using the same apple ID. Her husband passed away and she wants to merge his iMessages to her device. Her device and his device were only using their numbers, not the Apple ID for messages. He has a 5C (so iCloud sync isn’t on the table), she has a 6. Any advice? I was thinking i may have to tell her to keep his device aside and keep it separate from her iMessage?

No way to merge messages without iCloud due to Apple design, unfortunately... Keeping the second phone is the only option. Also make sure she has an iTunes backup of 5C on an external drive/safe location just to make sure it won't get lost or overwritten.
