iMessage buddy status notifications

i always have the buddy list minimised/hidden, so the only notification that someone has come online is the buddy online/offline sound being played.

is it possible for notification center (or growl) do display a notification when someone comes online or offline?

edit - i mean the messages client, and not iMessage!
