iMessage can be sent without wifi or 3G?

I'm pretty stumped by this...

Last night, i was told by a friend of mine (who is an IT specialist) that you can send an iMessage to another iOS device (iphone or itouch) even without having an actively running 3G or wifi. I tried this even before she told me about it but no matter how I tried it my message won't get through or it was just sent as a text message.

Can somebody tell me if this is possible or not? Please advise.
