How much data does a photo use when sending via iMessage over 3G?

eg take a pic with an iPhone 5 iSight 8MP camera, then share via iMessage?

It's just I'm thinking if getting an iPhone for the wife, she won't use data as such, so I'm hoping a 500Mb limit would be enough (I have unlimited so not bothered)

How can I tell? On Android there's a way to see what is using data individually etc. anything like this on iOS?

Cheers

The pictures are a couple mb each but no larger than 4mb.

Also the onavo count is a good app to track data usage, it tells how much data each app is using and it also helps you save some.

If you jailbreak, there is a utility which tells exactly what application uses how much data. For me it is about 2MB on an iPhone 5 back camera picture.

Its really not that big of a deal I know on ATT if you go over your data they just charge you for the next largest amount. So if she was to go over a month here or there it wouldnt be a huge deal.

I still think 500MB for an iPhone is very low.

I won't be jailbraking and I'm in UK. 500Mb is low and would never be enough for me, but my wife doesn't surf the net, she uses whatsapp between us, so obviously she'd use iMessage as we all have iPhones and iPads and Macs.

So apart from iMessage, odd app, can't see what she'd use. So if its 4Mb max then I'm looking at 125 pics.

iMessage does not compress pictures when sending so each image which would be in range of 2-4 MB would be sent as it is. Instead i suggest using whatsapp when sending the images. Whatsapp compresses the image to few 100 Kbs or less and saves on the data.
At least thats what i and my wife do personally. iMessage only for messages and whatsapp when pictures are to be sent.

Can you please mention which jailbreak app it is ?

You should also take into consideration whether she will be connected to wifi or not. I assume you have a network setup at your home. If she already doesn't use up a lot of data and you're both exchanging pictures back and forth via iMessage, the 400mb plan should be an issue. I'm sure you can always up the data plan if need be.

Yeh we use whatsapp now and it's great, sends pics fine. I didn't realise iMessage didn't compress them, to me that's daft, and there at least should be an option for it if you want to send full rez pics, and you can just use photo stream

iMessage compresses depending on whether the sender and the recipient are both on wifi. There's been a few studies done and there are several factors that determine how much is used.

So now we have a difference in opinion then. Spomeone says its ful rez, another says its compressed...

I'm not bothered what it is on WiFi as bandwidth/cost isnt an issue, its when its on 3G thats its a problem (well not for me I'm unlimited 3G here in UK on 3).

I would hope it is compressed but how can I find out for sure then. Does it always compress if so if someone is on 3G, eg only 1 on 3G,1 on WiFi
