Imessage delay opening pictures

Hi I just got an iphone 5 and something I've noticed is that whenever I open a picture through imessage it takes almost 5 seconds for the picture to open, however if I close it and open it again it almost instantaneous. Then if I go to a picture that another person sent me there will also be a 5 second delay opening, but after that all pictures in that specific imessage conversation will open instantaneously. Yet this is not how it works in my ipad 4. In there the pics always open immediately inside imessage.

Is this normal behavior for an iphone 5 with ios 6?

Something I just discovered, the delay does not happen if I go back to the homescreen before I open a pic in imessage
