iMessage Dictation Not Working When Connected to Bluetooth Headphones?

Today I was listening to music on my iPhone via Bluetooth and noticed that dictation for iMessage would not work - either through the watch mic or the Bluetooth headset mic. Is this normal?

Some bluetooth accessories present this issue. I'm not sure what it is but it seems to almost lock the audio IN to the BT device.

when my iphone is connected to my BT headset, it only wants to take input from the headset, problem is same is true for my panasonic phones at home, and Siri on the handset just won't work at all.

as for the watch, when my BT audio headset is connected, it is fine, but with a BT headset connected to the iphone/watch? it has problems.
